Biodynamics
Deepening Awareness Through a Felt Relationship with the Body
A depth psychologically informed, body oriented approach to psychotherapy

A True Revelation
For me personally, Biodynamics was a true revelation. In 1991, when I first encountered Gerda Boyesen, the remarkable pioneer of body psychotherapy, I knew that I had found a crucial key to my path in life. With deep trust and unwavering intuition, she followed the libido energy, the flow of life within each individual and within the group, with joy and delight.
And I knew immediately: This was what I wanted to learn.
Biodynamics is a body oriented approach to psychotherapy, based on the interplay of body, mind and soul. It is grounded in depth psychology. Based on the understanding that all psychological states are embodied in some way, Biodynamics sees psyche and body as two aspects of the same life process.

The roots of Biodynamic Psychology and Psychotherapy lie in a form of body therapy developed by Gerda Boyesen (born 1922) over 40 years of research and clinical practice. It was further developed by Ebba and Mona Lisa Boyesen, trainers at the European School of Biodynamic Psychology, and by numerous therapists. Several institutes have since emerged from this work, including in the Netherlands, France and Switzerland.
Alongside Jay Stattmann (Unitive Body Psychotherapy), Alexander Lowen (Bioenergetics), David Boadella (Biosynthesis) and Ron Kurtz (Hakomi), Gerda Boyesen was one of the pioneers of body psychotherapy.
She was an honorary member of the European Association for Body Psychotherapy (EABP) and honorary president of the Society for Biodynamic Psychology (GBP e.V.), the professional association for Biodynamic therapists in Germany.
She called her approach Biodynamic because the term refers to the principle of a natural, spontaneous flow of life energy – a force that moves us, brings us to life and gives us vitality and soul. (Bios means life, while dynamic refers to force or movement.)
Gerda Boyesen proposed that blockages in this life energy play a significant role in the development of psychological and psychosomatic difficulties.

Biodynamic Massage
Direct touch of the body can be deeply nourishing and soothing. Animals, and especially young children, respond naturally and visibly to caring, benevolent touch.
In Biodynamic Therapy, we make use of the natural “gurgling” sounds in the belly. An electronic stethoscope allows these subtle sounds to be heard and recorded. This is a distinctive feature of Biodynamic Massage and one of its unique characteristics. The body’s own feedback makes the treatment more precise, helping the practitioner to sense when the body is ready to release and when it needs more time.
To move out of the mind and into a deeper connection with ourselves, it is helpful to bring our awareness into the body. Mindful attention to the body can take many forms: through sensing, through contact, through touch, and through massage.
When we develop a genuine, felt relationship with our own body, entirely new possibilities of awareness can open up.

Vegetotherapy
The autonomic nervous system regulates processes in our body that happen unconsciously. In Biodynamic Vegetotherapy, we pay attention to spontaneous movements and the unconscious expressions of body and soul. In this way, inner parts of ourselves that have remained hidden from our conscious awareness can emerge and find expression. We follow our inner impulses and meet them with curiosity, openness, and kindness.
The body rediscovers its own natural expression and flow of life.
As the energy within us begins to flow more freely, we experience greater vitality and a renewed sense of aliveness and joy in life.

Relationship & Connection
Our lives are shaped by relationships. The early bonds we form with the people closest to us in childhood shape patterns that continue to influence our relationships throughout our lives.
To develop new capacities for connection and attachment, we need relationships in which we can grow and mature. Therapy, or one-to-one work, provides a safe and supportive space for this process.
Here, there is room to explore, to try things out, and to receive new impulses. A space where you can begin to build your life on your own terms, while staying connected to your boundaries and needs.

Being Held – Bonding
Sometimes a deep longing arises simply to be held, to be taken into someone’s arms – naturally, quietly, and with kindness.
When we have to move through the depths of hopelessness, helplessness, and feeling ungrounded in our lives, resting without expectation in another person’s arms can be deeply relaxing and profoundly integrating.
Slowly, a sense of stability and safety begins to settle into the body and into our lives. And everything begins to appear in a new light.
